Electronic Arts Apex Legends to be held at PNC Arena, Raleigh

Raleigh’s PNC Arena, home of the Carolina Hurricanes and the NC State Wolfpack men’s basketball team, will host video game competitors from around the world at an esports championship event next month.

Electronic Arts — the video game company behind such popular gaming franchises as Need for Speed, The Sims and EA Sports — is partnering with PNC to stage its second Apex Legends Global Series championship. Apex Legends is a free-to-play, battle royale in which three-person squads fight for survival.

The world’s top 40 AL squads will compete at PNC for a $500,000 grand prize and this year’s ALGS championship title. Thousands of spectators are expected to attend between July 7 and 10, according to Electronic Arts.

“Bringing ALGS to PNC Arena is a major milestone for the Apex brand and indicative of the title’s continued growth in the competitive scene,” John Nelson, senior director and commissioner of Apex Legends Esports, said in a press release. “The ALGS Championship is a true celebration of fandom, and we’re looking forward to delivering the first-ever live ALGS Championship experience for our community of players and the residents of Raleigh.”

In May, more than 539,000 virtual viewers tuned in each minute for the ALGS playoffs in Stockholm, Sweden, Electronic Arts reported. Attendees consumed a cumulative 10.3 million hours of live content.

“We are excited to work with Electronic Arts to stage their first Apex Legends Global Series Championship to a live audience,” said Don Waddell, PNC Arena and Carolina Hurricanes president, in a release. “We are looking forward to hosting our first-ever major esports competition. The ALGS Championship will allow us the opportunity to further solidify Greater Raleigh and PNC Arena as a global esports and entertainment destination.”

The announcement comes a week after Cary-based Epic Games announced its 2022 Fortnite Champion Series Invitationals will be held at the Raleigh Convention Center Nov. 12 and 13. The international competition has a $1 million prize pool.

The Fortnite World Cup in New York, held in 2019, drew 19,000 attendees, The N&O reported.
